You are right: the different templates only influence the display of the guestbook entries.
But the input form can be changed without changes to the source code under the link "General configuration" in the admin panel. There you can activate or deactivate practically every input field individually, with the exception of the field for entering a name and the entry.
To ensure that the script functions correctly and without errors, no changes should be made to the source code.
